Why Are Drama Lessons Beneficial for Children

Posted on April 8, 2021August 6, 2023

**Collaborative post**

Drama can be a great form of expression for anybody, giving people the chance to express themselves through story, movement and performance. It can be particularly beneficial for your kids as they’re growing up. To guide you through just why drama lessons can be so beneficial to your children, I’ve partnered with a Prep School in Buckinghamshire to highlight the power of drama for your child’s development.

Self-Expression & Life Skills

Drama isn’t just about learning lines and reciting them. It is about exploring how you can use your voice and body language to communicate feelings. It works on a number of creative skills, from changing voices to different kinds of movement and improvisation. It can encourage your child to think more creatively, as well as developing their means of communication and expression, finding new ways to express how they feel.

Inspires Teamwork

Much of drama involves collaboration, be that acting a scene with other performers, or working together to build sets and put a production together. It can help kids of all different personalities work towards a common goal and find a mutual love and appreciation for performing arts. Working with others on a creative project can also help build confidence and communication as your child collaborates with others.

Vocabulary Skills

Working with plays and having to learn lines is great practice for your children to both expand their vocabulary and practice their public speaking skills. Doing so through a means which is essentially fun role play will help broaden your child’s vocabulary in a very engaging way.

Builds Confidence

Performing can be a daunting task in front of an audience. But drama class expresses the importance of being prepared, with a focus on practice and discipline, which in turn can help your children build their confidence. Not only can it help confidence with public speaking, but drama can also help your children find the means to better express themselves. Being able to express yourself is crucial to building self-confidence.
