It is in a child’s nature to be curious about the world around them, which makes them naturally inclined to be fascinated by science. If you’re keen to help your child develop a deep love for the world of science, I’ve collaborated with a Pre Prep School in London to take you through some tips on how to open up the world of science to your inquisitive child!
Demonstrate That Science Is Everywhere
An easy thing to do as science is, quite literally, everywhere. From the natural world outside to the technology in the home to cooking dinner, science can be found in every aspect of life. Point out to your child the kind of different forms of science that exist in every aspect of life, and give them simple explanations as to the kind of science that is behind it. It will help them see how important it is in life, as well as stoke their natural curiosity.
Encourage Curiosity
Whether it is bringing attention to the science yourself, or answering any curious questions they may have about pretty much anything, is a great way to keep your children curious and excited about the world around them. If there is something they want to look deeper into, facilitate that independent learning and encourage them to find the answers to the questions that pop into their head.
Introduce Science-Fiction
Science-fiction is a very imaginative genre of pop culture that engages with big ideas and portrays hypothetical developments in science in ways that aim to be engaging and entertaining. Getting your children into science-fiction can help them gain a deeper appreciation for the kind of ideas that science can inspire in creative works of fiction.
Show An Interest Yourself
Demonstrating that you yourself find science fascinating will encourage your child to be more interested in the science around them. Share what you learn with your child about developments in science, and be open about anything you find fascinating, encouraging your child to share their own sense of intrigue in the world.
