If you want to add a little bit of creativity and joy to your daily routine, why not start a hobby? Whether you want to try something new, or you’re looking to re-discover a childhood passion, hobbies are a great way to learn new skills and express yourself. The trouble usually is where to begin with it. Here is a short guide to help you to start your new hobby, no matter what you’re into.
- Find your passion. The first step to starting a hobby is figuring out what you’re passionate about. Or at least, what you might be curious about! Think about the activities that get you excited, or the things that you’re drawn to. If you’re interested in crafting, for example, you could start by deciding what type of project interests you. If you’re drawn to sewing, you might want to buy fabrics online and explore the world of quilting. If painting is what’s calling to you, find the best brushes of water colours, and start experimenting. The key here is to choose something that’s fun and inspiring.
- Don’t put pressure on it. It’s so easy to get caught up in wanting to dive head first into a new hobby and buy every single accessory to help. But there really is no need to rush. Start with the smaller and more manageable steps of your hobby, so if you want to learn how to bake, don’t start with a wedding cake. Try making a loaf of bread, or cupcakes. If you want to learn to sew, start by researching sewing machines and techniques on YouTube. You need to give yourself some room to grow and learn as you go.
- Get your supplies. Now that you know the hobby that you’re going to try you need to get the supplies that you need. This doesn’t mean you go out and spend a fortune on fancy equipment, you can just start with the basics. Photographers never start with the best camera out there, they start with something small. If you want to try knitting, finding affordable yarn and needles can help. You want to get enough to get you started so that you don’t lose interest after you’ve dropped a load of money on it.
- Make it a habit. If you want to make sure that your hobby is a real part of your life, set aside a time every week to dive into it. Whether it’s a couple of hours on the weekend or just half an hour in the evening, carving out time for your hobby can make a difference in building yourself up within it.
- Embrace the learning process. The most fun part about having a hobby is the fact that you get to learn new things. Don’t be discouraged if it’s not perfect straight away though, because it will take time for you to learn. Remember, mistakes are part of the process and it gives you an opportunity to grow.
