The Musings of a Mummy

Should You Bring Your Parents To Live With You?

Posted on August 15, 2024

**Collaborative post**

As your parents get older, you might be worried about whether or not they can look after themselves. In cases like this, you will have to take more responsibility and you might even think about looking after them in your own home. There are both pros and cons of this decision so let’s explore this further.

Benefits

First, you need to think about the benefits and there are quite a lot to look at. One is that you will have complete control over their care which means that you won’t have to worry about them being mistreated or struggling with issues here. The second point to consider in terms of benefits is that your parents will be close to you as well as your children which is great news if you do have children. It will feel like one big family home. However, you also need to think about the issues.

Issues

The first major issues is that your parents might have more struggles then what you can deal with. For instance, they could be struggling with their mental health and could be suffering from a condition like dementia. In a case like this, then it’s going to mean that they could end up being a risk to both themselves and to others. That’s why an alternative like home care could be a better option. The big advantage here is that your elderly parent will receive care in the comfort of their own home and still receive the expert support that they need to stay on the right track both mentally and physically. Remember, if you do decide to look after your parents, you will also be taking on a lot of responsibility and this is going to weigh down on you as well as your family. It might stop you from doing all the things you want to in your life in the future.

Requirements

Finally, you might want to think about exploring the requirements that you need to have in place if you want to look after an elderly parent in your home. There are lots of points to consider here including the cost as well as how to make your home safe. If your parent does have issues with their mental or physical health, then you might need to make some changes to your home. This could include adding a stair lift if they are struggling with mobility or perhaps adding locks to places around the kitchen that could be dangerous. If you’re not sure what specific changes you need to make then you may want to consider getting a professional opinion.

We hope this helps you understand some of the key steps that you should take if you are thinking about inviting your parents to live with you. Remember, this isn’t always going to be a bad idea but it is important to understand what you are getting yourself into and the issues that you could face with this decision in the future. If you are not prepared for the worst then you could end up regretting this decision.
