How to Raise a Compassionate Child

Posted on July 22, 2022July 23, 2023

**Collaborative post**

We all hope that our children grow to be kind and respectful people. It all starts with you, their parents, as you are their role models. The way that you treat others and leave a mark on those around you will set an example that they will likely follow. Aside from that, it’s important to do vice versa and condemn any bad behaviour that you see happening around them as otherwise they can get very mixed messages and think that it’s okay to treat others poorly. We have more tips on how you can raise a compassionate child from a private school in Leatherhead which we’ve shared with you below.

Talk Kindly About Others

It’s not nice to talk about others in a negative way. It can be very hurtful when the person discovers it. Some of us do it without realising and leading on from the point before, if you do it, your child will likely too.

Emotional Intelligence

It’s important to teach children the difference between emotions so that they can identify and understand when others are sad, annoyed etc. It can help them to support those around them as well as avoid awkward social situations like offence. This is something which you can do by exploring human interactions and emotions on TV or by pointing them out in person. Being wary of TV shows they watch is also a very good starting point – I personally found this out the hard way when Harry used to copy bad behaviours seen in cartoons, which in turn led to a lifetime bad of watching Horrid Henry many years back.

Talk About Feelings

Another way is to talk about feelings. This will not only help them to understand but help them to be in better touch with their mental health and teach them how to overcome obstacles.

Explore Gratitude

Looking at what you have to be grateful for can help children to understand the importance of being kind to others and how it can make them feel. This is something that you can get them to do by taking a moment to say grace and doing meditation together where you think about those that you are appreciative of.
