Swimming pools in your backyard can bring many hours of entertainment for both you and your children during the warm months, but it is also important to remember the potential risks that accompany owning one.
Here Are A Few Tips To Ensure Children’s Safety Around A Swimming Pool:
Supervision:
To ensure children remain safe around pools, always have an adult present for supervision – don’t assume older siblings can provide adequate supervision – they need one adult per four children present when hosting parties with other kids.
Fencing:
Fencing your pool area can help deter unsupervised access and protect both children and pets from danger. Ideally, your fence should be at least four feet high with vertical slats less than four inches wide to keep children from squeezing through; additionally, if there are ladders or steps leading into your pool it would be wise to install locks to restrict unauthorised entry.
Emergencies:
On the occasion of emergencies, always ensure that adequate safety equipment such as rope, flotation device and first aid kit is close at hand. Also, make sure all adults present know how to perform CPR as it could save a life in an incident.
Teach Pool Safety Rules:
Elderly children should be taught pool safety rules such as not running around the area, diving in shallow water, and not pushing others into the pool. Younger children should not swim alone or come near to the pool without an adult present.
Pool Cleaning:
Maintaining your pool clean is critical in avoiding illnesses caused by bacteria or debris in its waters. Regularly check chlorine levels as well as pH levels using test strips or other tools and add chemicals as necessary to balance them out. Also, remember to empty skimmer baskets frequently throughout the week and vacuum once every seven days; additionally clean out your filter regularly so it remains operational!
Pool Covers:
If your pool is left unattended or unsupervised, consider investing in a safety cover to prevent accidental drowning. These covers will keep water and debris out when not in use and can be quickly released if necessary; additionally, they should be regularly inspected for wear and tear or any holes that have developed over time.
Swim Lessons:
One of the best ways to ensure your kids’ safety in and around pools is to enroll them in swim lessons. Swim classes will teach them to feel at ease in water while simultaneously teaching skills like floating, treading water and swimming strokes which could save their life should they ever fall in.
Pool Toys and Games:
When not in use, toys should be removed from the pool to reduce tripping hazards as they could attract young children who do not yet know how to swim. If your children play in or near the pool with toys at any point during playtime, an adult should always be present to monitor them and help ensure they remain safe.
By taking these steps you can help to ensure a safer pool experience for your children. By supervising, fencing, emergency preparedness planning, teaching safety rules, cleaning and maintaining their pool area regularly as well as enrolling them in swim lessons, you will give your children all they need to enjoy swimming safely without risk.
