How to Prepare Your Home for Winter

Posted on November 20, 2024

**Collaborative post**

Whether we like it or not, winter is coming. Along with winter, we will have cold weather, lots of rain or snow, and potentially stormy weather. So, how can you prepare your home and make sure that your family stays cosy and comfortable throughout the winter months?

Here are a few home improvement ideas and maintenance tips to help you out.

Install a Log Burner

Before the winter sets in properly, it’s a good idea to get a log burner in your home. Log burners are more efficient than open fires and some people find that they’re able to save money on their heating bills.

Log burners primarily heat one room at a time, so if your family tends to stay in one room, it’s more efficient to heat that room more than the others.

One of the best things about log burners is that, even if you have a blackout for any reason, you can still heat part of your home. You can even cook on a log-burning stove, as you can use the top of the stove as a makeshift oven stovetop.

Whatever you do, don’t forget to stock up on plenty of fuel for the fire. Often, it’s better to order fuel in bulk rather than as you need it, as long as you can store the logs somewhere to keep them safe and dry.

You will also get the fun of lighting a fire and enjoying the ambience it offers.

Improve Your Insulation

As well as generating heat, it’s important that you’re able to keep heat in your property. Bad insulation can lead to drafts and higher utility bills, especially if it’s especially cold. You’re essentially paying to heat not just your home, but the outside of your house as well.

So, look for ways to improve your insulation. Check your roof for damage and holes, as this can cause drafts, and make sure to check the insulation under your roof as well.

Another potential issue with your insulation could be your doors and windows. Over time, these can lose their seal, which means that they let cold air in and allow your nice warm air to escape. While it might be pricey to get your doors, windows, and roof replaced, it can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Boiler Service and Repair

While a log burning fire is nice, a boiler is still a vital part of your home’s heating system. Your boiler keeps your radiators on and allows you to have hot water.

During the winter, there’s nothing worse than being forced to have a cold shower. On the other hand, a nice hot bath can be a treat that really warms you up after a freezing cold day. So, it’s best to get your boiler checked out.

Boiler repair can be a lifesaver if your boiler has stopped working for whatever reason. When your boiler is working again, you can be more comfortable once more.
