Surviving The Pandemic’s Financial Impact: Little Ways You Can Cut Costs

Posted on October 15, 2020August 14, 2023

**Collaborative post**

It’s safe to say that the pandemic that we are currently living through has had a significantly detrimental impact on many people’s financial security. These last few months have been exceedingly difficult, and many people have struggled as a result. Whether you’re one of these people or not, naturally you want to do everything that you can to make sure that you’re able to cut costs and keep your finances in check despite the current pandemic.

As a parent, this isn’t an easy task, is it? There’s always something else that needs to be paid for. However, just because cutting costs isn’t simple, that doesn’t mean that it’s not doable. When it comes to reducing your family’s living costs, there are a number of simple steps that you can take to significantly reduce your spending. It might not be easy but it sure is possible.

Intrigued? Wondering what steps you can take to cut costs without too bigger impact on family life? Below is a guide packed full of handy hacks for cutting costs and ensuring that you come out the other side of the pandemic with your finances intact! (It is doable – we promise! It’s just a case of taking a creative approach, that’s all!)

Cut family food costs

Let’s start with a simple one: reduce the amount that you’re spending on family food costs. You might think that you’re already spending as little as possible but there are always further ways that you can save, it’s just a case of thinking about what those ways are, that’s all.

Start by considering buying own-brand products wherever possible – while you might not be comfortable doing this with meat and fish, for vegetables, cupboard essentials and dairy there’s no reason not to make the change. Meat and fish are not all the same – higher welfare products tend to be of a better quality, which is why it makes sense to spend more – however, other products such as cheese, pasta, rice, and vegetables are generally the same, regardless of whether they’re brand basics or luxury products. You can make a large amount of savings by opting to buy brand basic items wherever possible.

Another step that you might want to take is to consider cutting down on your meat consumption; if you want to cut your family food costs, reduce how much meat you eat. By opting for vegetarian meals instead of meat packed ones, you can significantly reduce your food shop costs. There are lots of amazing vegetarian recipes that you can try too – it’s just a case of thinking about what the recipes are that will be the best fit for your whole family. Good recipes include macaroni cheese, halloumi tacos, homemade pizza, veggie lasagne, and three-bean chilli – they’re quick, easy and packed full of flavour.

Reuse and recycle wherever possible

When it comes to cutting your spending costs, an important step to take is to reuse and recycle wherever possible. Instead of throwing items away, consider how you can reuse and recycle them. Noticed that a piece of furniture is damaged? Don’t just chuck it out, consider how you could reuse or recycle it. By taking a zero-waste approach to life, you can significantly reduce your spending and save money in lots of simple ways. In addition to cutting your family spending costs, leading a low waste life will also mean contributing to saving the environment, which is a seriously important topic right now. If action isn’t taken soon, it will be too late, so it’s nice to know that you can help by reusing your old items, instead of chucking them.

It’s not just furniture that you can reuse and recycle either, there is a wide range of items that can be reused. You just need to take the time to think about what these items are, and how you can get more use out of them. Take your glasses for instance, instead of disposing of the frames when you need new lenses, save yourself money and simply have the lenses replaced but keep the frames. Not only does this reduce how much you have to spend, but it also helps to reduce your impact on the environment, making it a win-win.

Getting into a habit of reusing and recycling isn’t always easy; it might take some time for you to get into the swing of things. However, once you’ve adapted to reusing and recycling wherever possible, you will find that doing so becomes second nature to you.

Save energy where possible

When it comes to cutting your spending costs, another easy way to reduce the amount that you’re spending is to reduce your energy usage wherever possible. Of course, reducing your energy usage isn’t always a simple or straightforward task, but by putting the right measures in place you can significantly reduce the amount of energy that you and your family are using, and thus cut your energy bills.

Cutting your energy bills means making an action plan to help you – and your family – to use less energy. You need to think about the ways in which you can do this, such as by turning your heating down a few degrees, having more showers than baths, and making sure to turn the lights off when leaving a room. You could also look at getting a smart hub for your home if you don’t already have one so that you are able to monitor your energy usage more easily.

If you want to encourage the whole family to get involved in energy saving, then it’s a good idea to make time to talk to your children about why it is important. You need to explain to them why you want to try and reduce the amount of energy you’re using and how they can help you to do that by turning lights off and not leaving things plugged in and running on standby.

Be smart about days out

Family days out might be a great way to spend some much-needed family time together but they can also be exceedingly expensive, depending of course on where you go and how large your family is. While days out at zoos, theme parks and cinemas might be a whole lot of fun, the truth is that they can also be extremely expensive, which is why it’s important to think carefully when planning family days out, allowing you to help cut costs wherever possible.

The good news is that while there are lots of days out that can be expensive, there are also lots of days out that can be more affordable – or even free. It’s just a case of getting creative, that’s all. The kinds of days out that are free include beach days, picnics, family bike rides, exploring local woodland areas, and other fun, outdoor activities. These kinds of days out can be a whole lot of fun, it’s just a case of making sure to plan them properly, that’s all.

If you want to take your little ones to a paid experience, such as a theme park or cinema, then it’s a good idea to find ways to reduce admission price. Sometimes you will find that by booking for a certain time you can get a reduced rate of entry. You might also find that if you book as part of a big group you will receive a discount – so it’s worth getting a few families together to keep the cost low. You could also utilise online deals and discount sites like Voucher Cloud and Groupon to find deals and discounts on days out.

Use budgeting apps

When it comes to making sure that you aren’t overspending, you might find that creating a budget within an interactive budgeting app that connects to your bank account, could be helpful. There is a wide range of fantastic budgeting apps available, and they have been designed to make managing your money simpler, easier and more convenient. So if you’re struggling to create and stick to a budget, it might be worth utilising one of these apps – most financial planning apps are free to use, so there’s no reason not to give one a try. If you’re not sure which app to opt for, take the time to do some research and have a play around with a few different ones to see which app is the best fit for you and your financial planning needs. The fact is that when it comes to saving money, financial planning really is a crucial element and one that you need to be willing to take seriously.

You could even try to make some money by investing in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. With this in mind, if cryptocurrencies appeal to you, then looking into trading tools and platforms like Bitcoin Superstar could help you to determine your next steps. You can learn more about Bitcoin Superstar by reading some of the Bitcoin Superstar Erfahrungen (reviews) on the Coincierge website. Just remember to be careful when investing and only invest what you can afford as nothing is guaranteed.

There you have it, a few simple tips and ideas for ways in which you – and your family – can reduce your living costs and make managing your finances a little easier. While it might not seem easy to reduce your spending and make family life more affordable, the fact is that the steps above can help to make the process a little easier and less stressful for you and your family.
