How to Encourage Good Study Habits in Your Children

Posted on November 25, 2019September 1, 2023

**Collaborative post**

Getting into good habits from the start of your child’s education will help to make school life easier for them when the work becomes tougher and the homework gets heavier!

Studying may not be at the top of your child’s priorities, but you can help to encourage them by making their homework feel less like a chore. Here are some helpful strategies from Taunton School to help make study time more enjoyable for your children…

Build a successful study routine with your child by creating a homework schedule. This will help your child to dedicate some of their time, each day to studying.  By establishing a good routine, your child will feel more organised and able to manage their time more effectively. Your child can also use their new schedule as a calendar for upcoming exams and coursework deadlines. Also, by crossing tasks off of their schedule, your child will begin to feel less stressed and more motivated.

Parents can help to encourage a positive attitude towards studying by joining in with their children! Share study time with your son or daughter by catching up on some of your own work. This is a great opportunity to model good working behaviour, whilst catching up on some admin. Perhaps you could even use this time to take a new online course?
Make study time feel special by sitting in the same room as your child and being on hand to help. You could even share some of your favourite snacks together as you study.

If your child is enjoying a particular topic at school, you could help to enhance their knowledge on this subject by planning an educational day trip. This could include a day out to a museum, art gallery or simply a local park. Learning outside of school offers a number of educational benefits and can help to inspire your child. It will also make a fun day out for all the family!
