How Is The Car Powered?
This goes a bit deeper than just plugging the car in and then driving it. Yes, you will be driving without emitting any pollutants… but you need to think about what happened during the charging period. If you used solar panels or wind turbines to get that electricity to charge it, then you are truly not emitting anything. But if a power plant is needed to create electricity, then THAT is what is emitting pollutants.
What About Making The Battery?
Here is a bit of a conundrum – the battery helps make the car more eco-friendly… but the construction for this huge thing requires a lot of raw material like lithium. Naysayers point this out as a demerit against the electric car. Research has shown that the positives of the lack of emissions from the car outweigh the possible environmental damage of sourcing the lithium and the energy needed for the battery to run.
Another part of this is how the battery is disposed of when it is finally depleted. There is not a big recycling market due to the material, which results in it winding up being put in landfills, which are NOT environmentally friendly. With the proliferation of electric cars, people are trying to figure out how to recycle them to help the Earth.
Types of Emissions
There is another factor… and it’s split into two parts: direct and life cycle. Direct is the one that comes out of your car’s tailpipe. Life cycle is measured by several things: distribution, recycling, disposal, fuel, and vehicle production. It’s hard to measure this, but electric cars are thought to have a lower amount of life cycle emissions due to their not using gas.
Ultimately, there are a lot of variables to consider, but technology continues to advance each year and there is no stopping the innovative minds that will improve electric cars. These vehicles will continue to reduce their carbon footprints compared to conventional cars and be less prone to pollution.
