Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Homework

Posted on February 19, 2020September 1, 2023

**Collaborative post**

Have you noticed that sometimes all you need to do is say the word homework and you are almost guaranteed to get some kind of negative moan or groan in response? A lot of children really do hate doing homework and learn to master the art of procrastination from a young age so how can we help them with it to make it a more pleasant task all round? A private school in Kingston Upon Thames have provided us with some helpful tips and tricks to help.

Be involved

It is important to note that the amount of interest you show in your child’s education can have a huge impact on how well they perform in school. If your child is aware that they have your full support where their education is concerned, they will feel more determined to succeed.

Organisation

Organisation and structure are vital if you want your child to reach their full potential at school and in life in general. Put together a study timetable and make sure you know what homework is due and when the deadlines are.

Encouragement & rewards

Make sure you are encouraging your child to do well by using positive language and introducing a reward chart. This will help your child to learn that hard work pays off, praise is a great motivator for kids.

Make it more fun

Some subjects require more concentration than others however there should never be a need for complete silence and strict rules when it comes to homework time. Loosen up a bit and allow some laughter! How about an educational trip to a local museum, art gallery or zoo to change things up a bit? Maybe you could invite one of their friends from school over to study for the next round of exams or work together on the project. Introduce competitions or races to keep them motivated and reward them afterwards for good work.
