Most parents will understand how stressful the morning routine can be at times, especially if you’re guilty of hitting the snooze button one too many times. Sometimes it can feel like a losing battle trying to get everyone out the door on time, but it is possible if you put your mind to it. All it takes is a few simple changes here and there. Here are some useful tips from a prep school in London to help you have a smoother sailing morning.
Start by planning ahead and getting everything prepared in advance. This means that before you all go to bed on an evening school lunches and bags should be packed, all letters should be signed and homework should be completed. This will save any last-minute rushing before school. Create or purchase a checklist that you can all tick off so you don’t forget anything.
Make sure you get yourself out of bed and dressed before your kids so that you’re not trying to juggle taking care of yourself and them. That is simply a recipe for disaster. Set your alarm as early as you can, get yourself a coffee, get dressed and do your hair and make-up, and then wake your kids. That way you won’t have to put on your mascara whilst chaos unleashes in the next room.
I have the children’s uniform’s all ready for them in specific drawers on the hallway – this means they grab their uniforms from the correct drawer and can be ready in no time. It is also easier when I am putting away the laundry.

Try and be consistent with your morning routine so that your children know exactly what they need to do and when. Eventually, it will come second nature to your family and you won’t have to keep reminding your youngsters to do certain things because they will already know. The same rule applies to the evening routine; if your kids don’t get to bed at a reasonable time, they probably won’t wake up when they should and, if they do, they’ll be grumpy and slow.
You might need to introduce rewards for your kids if they get themselves ready on time, just as a little incentive. For instance, if they are on time every day during the week, they get a treat at the weekend. As you probably know, sometimes parents have to do whatever it takes to get their kids to cooperate.
