Uniforms are very different across public and independent schools around the world. Some schools specify that children must wear a more formal uniform, complete with blazers and ties; while other schools have a more relaxed style, like a simple polo-shirt adorned with the school logo. Although many pupils aren’t necessarily a fan of school uniform, there are actually various benefits associated with wearing a school uniform.
I have teamed up with a pre-preparatory school in Hertfordshire to explore some of the advantages of school uniform.
Improves safety and security
When pupils are dressed in uniform, it’s a lot easier to distinguish non-students and strangers, ensuring the school staff are better prepared to handle uncertain situations appropriately.
Saves time in the mornings
When students wear a uniform, it’s easier to select each item of clothing in the mornings, as there’s no need to pick out a new outfit each day.
Cheaper than stocking a wardrobe
Buying a set of uniform, or even two can help parents to save money. School uniforms tend to last for at least a whole year, which is far more affordable than buying your child a wardrobe full of the latest trends.
Reduces bullying over fashion
One of the biggest benefits of school uniform is that they help to reduce bullying and jealousy amongst students, whose families can afford different types of clothing. As a result, students are much less likely to suffer from low self-esteem. Essentially, by ensuring all students are wearing the same clothing, schools reduce the opportunities for kids to tease one another.
Students can take a united front
When wearing their school uniforms, students are representing the school they belong to. This helps to create a sense of unity and school spirit. By implementing a school uniform, the school can help students to build a stronger team mentality.
