Maximising Space in Your Home: Ingenious Solutions for a Spacious Feel

Posted on June 23, 2023July 23, 2023

**Collaborative post**

Do you ever look around your home and wish for more space? You’re not alone. Maximising space within a home is a universal challenge, given that square footage comes at a premium when buying, and our belongings seem to multiply and become clutter. Fortunately, there are ingenious ways to utilise every corner of your home and create a spacious feel. All it takes is the ability to be flexible and a little bit of thinking outside of the box. The following examples may be of use to you if you’re looking for more space in your home. Rather than having to throw things out or tolerate an extreme level of clutter, bear the following in mind.

One often overlooked space is under the staircase. This under-utilised area can transform into a storage hub for things like vacuum cleaners, coat racks or any items that seem to awkwardly crowd your living spaces. Instead of crunching the space you already have, this innovative use of space can significantly declutter common areas. It’s generally dead space in most homes, because there isn’t much that people can actually do in this area with little headroom. If you have a higher staircase than most, you can potentially move a computer desk in there and use it as a mini-office, but otherwise it’s great for storage.

Repurposing rooms is another effective strategy. Take that seldom-used spare bedroom or study and turn it into a functional storage room. This room can house occasionally-used household appliances or store boxes of dormant items, making them easily accessible when needed but out of sight and out of mind when they aren’t. If you should suddenly need a spare bedroom, you have all of those items gathered in one space, making it easy to take them out and transport them to off-site storage, where they can stay until the room is vacant again – or, if it comes into permanent use, giving you time to locate them elsewhere.

bed and wardrobe

Let’s not forget the bedrooms themselves. There’s likely space under your bed that remains untouched. A few storage boxes for out-of-season clothing or spare linens can be easily tucked away here. Moreover, consider the option of a built-in wardrobe. Not only does it offer additional storage without reducing your space, but it also gives your room a clean, uncluttered aesthetic. A built-in wardrobe is an excellent choice for those who desire an orderly, open space for relaxation and rest. Your bedroom is the room where it is perhaps most important to have space to slouch, so having the space crunched by bulky furniture really isn’t it.

Your home’s entryway is in many ways your first chance to create a spacious feel. Shoe racks or lined-up shoes near the front door may seem convenient, but they can make an already narrow area feel more cramped. Consider relocating your shoe rack to a more spacious area, like under the stairs, ensuring a clear and inviting walkway. It’s also a simple matter of fact that when returning from work or school, people are keen to ditch bags and other items they are carrying, so implement a rule that nothing can be placed on the floor around the door.

When purchasing new furniture, think storage. Many furniture pieces now come with built-in storage options—footstools that open up to store small items, tables with an under-shelf, and beds with large drawers. Furniture that performs double-duty not only provides more storage but also reduces the space usually taken up by separate pieces. Any time you need to buy a bed, a desk, or even a sofa, consider whether there is a way to get one with storage space included. The difference this will make to the space available in your home cannot be overestimated.

Finally, don’t forget the great outdoors. You don’t need to store everything indoors. Many outdoor storage solutions protect your items from the elements while keeping them within easy reach. These outdoor storage units can house tools and equipment – which often, in any case, needs to be used outdoors anyway – further decluttering your indoor spaces.

In conclusion, creating a spacious feel in your home is achievable. Whether it’s using that unused space under the staircase, opting for a built-in wardrobe, or purchasing dual-purpose furniture, every nook and cranny in your home has the potential to contribute to a more open, clutter-free living environment. The impact this will have on your mental well-being and on the comfort in your home has to be felt to be believed. Before too long, you’ll be seeing space-saving solutions wherever you look.
