Everyone loves a trip to the spa, the smell, the relaxing music, the soft towels, the dim lighting and warm glow, but what if you could have the same relaxing vibes at home? Well good news, because by incorporating elements of your favourite spa into your bathroom decoration and design at home you could create a rejuvenating and restful space for the whole family to enjoy. So if you want to experience a spa every day then here are a few things you could do.
Declutter your bathroom space
The first thing to notice about most spas is that they are clutter-free spaces. Products are lined up neatly ready for use, but everything else is stored away out of sight and out of mind. A cluttered space can create a cluttered mind and so it’s important to keep your space clean and clear for maximum relaxation. Firstly, declutter your bathroom, get rid of any duplicates and old products you never use and either store them away, donate them to charity if they are unopened and in date or bin them. If you find there’s still a lot on show then assess the space and see if you can include any more storage solutions. Could you fit in a cupboard under the sink? Or shelving on the wall for your folded towels? Your storage doesn’t have to all be concealed but just make sure that everything has a home and a place.
Rejuvenate your tap fixtures
If you have the budget, then you can easily turn your bathroom into a spa by purchasing a new matching bathroom suite, you know the one with the stand-alone bath and the ‘his and hers’ sinks. For most people though, this will seem a little extreme, for a more budget option instead focus on your bathroom fixtures such as the taps and the showerhead. A simple upgrade to your faucets can lift the look of the whole room and bring an old bath, sink or shower back into the 21st century. Find a style that suits you and that fits into your idea of a relaxing spa, it could be a gentle waterfall tap or something bolder like a brass fixture, you can also get those small basin taps from Trading Depot. Whatever you choose try to emanate it throughout the rest of the room. In the shower why not upgrade the showerhead to a waterfall shower or a luxe sprayer and replace a cloth shower curtain with a glass door?

Lift the lighting
Nothing quite ruins the illusion of a spa at home quite like a bright and intrusive overhead light. Light plays such an important part in the relaxation process and so it’s an aspect of your bathroom you shouldn’t ignore. Natural light can be very beneficial to the body and harsh white light can be jarring causing stress and headaches so it’s important that you get the lighting right. If you have a window in your bathroom then incorporate a blind that allows you to control the amount of light coming in depending on the time of day. With your light fixtures, opt for dimmable lights which you can lower for a relaxing bath and raise for a morning shower and try to stick to golden lighting rather than bright white.
Upgrade your towels and robes
One of the lovely things about a hotel or spa experience is the beautiful, big, soft towels and the fluffy white bathrobes. Don’t miss out, bring hotel quality bathrobes into your home and have this experience every day of the week. Upgrade your full towel collection and fold them neatly on your new towel shelves, place a couple of hooks on the back of the door to store your new bathrobes and step out of the bath or shower straight into the arms of luxury. There’s only one problem, if you get a set for you everyone will want one too!
Fit a new floor
Another way to completely change the look of your bathroom, without changing the suite itself, is to fit a new bathroom floor. For a budget option opt for vinyl or linoleum flooring which will enable you to achieve a luxury look for far less, vinyl and linoleum can even be laid over your old floor and is easy to take up again if you change your style again. If you have a little more to spend then maybe have underfloor heating installed and then top with your favourite natural tiles so that your toes stay warm whatever the weather. If fitting an entirely new floor simply isn’t an option then look into buying a new bathroom rug. Don’t think that bathroom rugs are limited to little mats, they come in all shapes and sizes and can lift the look of an old bathroom floor in seconds.
Make the room smell like a spa
What smell do you associate with a spa? Scent can evoke memories and send signals to our brains to encourage relaxation. If you have a certain smell that you associate with a spa then try to recreate this at home. Bring in some pretty scented candles, use a reed diffuser or try an aromatherapy diffuser, whichever you prefer. Some common spa scents include; lavender, eucalyptus and rose but the chances are your spa memory is a combination of many different products. If you really must know then ask your spa if they have a signature scent, you may be able to buy it, if not then experiment with essential oils and smells until you find the perfect one.
Bring in some spa music
Smell isn’t the only sense that can evoke relaxing memories of the spa, so can sound. Don’t just listen to the sound of your extractor fan but bring the sounds of the spa in with you. You can do this on a simple Bluetooth speaker or if you want to go one further then consider installing smart surround sound around your home so you can effortlessly control the music as you go from room to room.
